Drilling hollow roll is a kind of roll. Gray cast iron rolls with low strength were used in rolling soft non-ferrous metals in the middle ages. In the mid-18th century, Britain mastered the production skills of chilled cast iron rolls for rolling steel plates. In the second half of the 19th century, the advancement of steelmaking skills in Europe required the rolling of larger tonnage steel ingots. The strength of both gray cast iron and chilled cast iron rolls could not meet the requirements. General cast steel rolls with carbon content of 0.4% ~ 0.6% were born accordingly. The appearance of heavy forging equipment further improves the strength and toughness of the cast roll with this composition. The application of alloying elements and the introduction of heat treatment in the early 20th century significantly improved the wear resistance and strength and toughness of cast and forged steel hot and cold rolls. After adding molybdenum into the cast iron roll for hot rolling plate and strip, the surface quality of rolled products is improved. The core strength of casting roll is obviously improved by compound pouring with flushing method.
The development of contemporary steel rolling skills promotes the development and research of higher function rolls. Centrifugal casting and new composite methods, such as continuous casting composite method (CPC method), eruption deposition method (Osprey method), electroslag welding method and hot isostatic pressing method, have been used in the new generation of profile, wire rod and strip mills in Europe and Japan.
